XCELL BOILER ROOM CASE STUDIES

Case Study # 1

Project Installation: Pekin Hospital; Pekin, Illinois

System Design: XCELL Mechanical Systems
System Installation: XCELL Mechanical Systems
Boiler Control: Combustion Technologies

The Client
Pekin Hospital, located just south of Peoria, in Pekin, Illinois, is a 132 - bed medical center that provides advanced care and state-of-the-art services to the area. More than 170 physicians and more than 700 employees serve the needs of patients in this community hospital.
The Problem
  • Severely outdated, structurally questionable, watertube boilers
  • Wide, seasonal load swings, which created tremendous boiler stresses
  • Relatively new, Industrial Combustion burners
  • Maintenance personnel diversification requires better automation and annunciation

The Pekin Hospital's steam requirements were fulfilled by two Babcock Wilcox, watertube boilers, which had far outlived their efficient and safe operating life. In 1991 the boilers were fit with new Industrial Combustion burners which was a vast improvement from the pneumatically driven Coen burners which were the original equipment.

Summary : Old equipment, obvious stress wear, extremely wide seasonal load swings, however, good fuel burning equipment.

XCELL BOILER ROOM SOLUTION

  • New Hurst wet-back firetube boilers
The obvious solution to the problem of outdated and structurally questionable boilers, was to replace them with the high quality of the Hurst Boiler Company. Two 500 H.P., 3-pass, wetback boilers were installed, even within the confines of an already to small, boiler room.
  • XCELL's exclusive portable burner system.
The most cost effective solution to the extremely wide seasonal load swings, which are experienced at Pekin Hospital and most similar facilities, is to provide burner firing rates which will more accurately match up with system loads. Since building loads regularly approach a 15 to 1 turndown ratio and even the higher turndown burners like the Industrial Combustion D-Series, are limited to a 10 to 1 turndown in firing rate, the answer is to use the portable burner concept, which is exclusive to
XCELL Mechanical Systems. Seasonal burner changeouts take about 4 hours and can be performed by in-house personnel.
  • Combustion Technologies Annunciation and Control

Maintenance personnel are being required to be far more diverse than ever before, thus the importance of a control specific, boiler annunciation system which provides continual boiler and burner safety control status.

Instant system diagnosis allows rapid response to boiler system problems which, in turn, aids in the reduction and possible elimination of boiler system downtime. Remote monitoring from in-house P.C.s or from off-site Lap-top P.C.s provide a 24 hour communication with the system.
